FOLLOW THIS MOM OF SIX ON HER QUEST TO CONQUER A TRIATHLON

In the spring of 2006, New Braunfels' Kaarina Owens, mom of 6 and co-author of the Put a Lid on It! cookbook series, decided to train for the Danskin Triathlon.  Follow her training trials and tribulations,  from her first workout to the big day.

JUNE 11, 2007 - RACE DAY!!! (CONTINUED)

We then left the bikes and headed off for the run…Oh the terrible run.  I can’t really say much about it other than the fact that it was long, and hard and hot and tiring.  Mostly what the run, walk, run, walk, run did for was give us time to talk and reflect on the whole experience and to focus on the fact that we had only a few miles in between us and our goal.  After a very long 3 miles, we rounded that last corner and the finish line came into view.  Our adrenaline began to flow and our hearts began to pump a little bit harder, so with renewed strength, we ran strong to the end.

As we approached the finish line I heard one of the most wonderful  sounds ever…Over the loud speaker came a voice saying “congratulations Kaarina & Jasmin Owens”… My sister in law, who had raced by my side from start to finish, grabbed my hand and we crossed over the line together, arms raised, heads high and spirits soaring.

We did it!!!  We actually did it!!!  What a wonderful feeling!  What a wonderful day!  As the medals of accomplishment were placed around our necks, we smiled and thanked each other, and God for allowing us to make it through.  It was such an amazing feeling…followed shortly thereafter by nausea. (Hey, you want me to be honest right?)

Anyway, after a long and exhausting trek, from my first journal entry to this, my final entry following the race, I know that I am forever changed, in spirit, mind and body.  I have come to discover that the following saying really does hold true:
“The woman who starts the race is not the same woman who finishes the race”.

I, Kaari Owens, am still a woman, a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a friend and many more wonderful things.

BUT, today I am something I wasn’t yesterday…
I AM A TRI-ATHLETE!
